How Often to Wash Pillows Update 01/2023

How Often to Wash Pillows

How to wash feather pillows depends upon the season is dependent upon the amount of dirt and grime in the air. You can determine how often to wash a pillow by measuring the diameter of the pillow. When you are measuring the diameter, you must measure from the tip of the pillow to the top of the head and also from the foot of the pillow to the tip of the head.

Using the above guidelines and measurements, you should be able to determine how often to wash foam pillows. For winter you want to wash them at least once per year, but summer you should wash them every other year.

Regular or “original” detergent is the best choice for all fabrics. It is designed to work with fabric softeners and should be used at the recommended settings. Rinse thoroughly to remove any excess detergent.

You should not use fabric softener on foam pillows. It will only damage the fibres of the fabric and cause an allergic reaction in some people.

You will need a washing machine with a high temperature setting and a dryer to do the rest of the process. The machine is only needed if you decide to machine wash the pillow cover as opposed to washing it by hand.

You should hang the pillow cover up in the dryer, folded in half, but leave the machine on so you can add a few extra cycles. This should be done about one hundred times, usually more, depending upon the size of the pillow and whether or not you have already hand washed it.

Once the pillow has been washed it should then be rinsed thoroughly to remove any residue left on the fibres. You should leave the pillow to dry on its own or place in a damp towel in the sun for a few minutes.

You will want to flip the pillow over, when it is completely dry and then lay it flat to make sure that there is no water or any moisture remaining on the pillow. It may need to be hand washed in cold water, if you are not using a machine.

Foam pillows are not the same as bed sheets. A regular sheet is made of either cotton or polyester fibres and not of foam fibres.

If you have a regular pillow cover, it should last as long as a standard pillow. But if you are buying one new, make sure that you take the time to wash it before you put it away.

As long as the pillow cover you buy is machine washable, you should always be able to use it on its own. However, if you would like to re-use the pillow cover, it may be necessary to steam it on gentle cycle before you put it away.

Should you ever want to change the colour of the pillow, all you need to do is add a fresh packet of thread to the pillow and start over. If you are wanting to use a pillow that is already pre-washed, you can let it get really dirty and then wash it in the machine, but never in the washer.
